Sewing the raw silk

Today's a snow day (check out my husband's new/old blog - that's me shovelling! Hey! Why isn't he?) so I don't have to go to my class so I'm going to get some sewing done. (I'm taking classes in how to be a personal trainer - there's no such thing as too much education!)
raw silk suit (a collection of pink)
I was looking through my thread collection and saw that I didn't have a very pale pink for the lining. I'm going to sew the seams and darts in the off white that I'm using for the silk and figure out the quilting later.

I have been doing all the prep work - zigzagging the long seams so they won't ravel, ironing on the interfacing, sewing the darts. There are a lot of darts - two long vertical ones in the back, two verticals in the front and two bust darts, times two for the lining too. But when I had the sleeves out side by side, I suddenly noticed that they looked completely different! Of course, I had cut them out individually, not two at a time on folded fabric, but I hadn't noticed how different the weave in the fabric was until now. And now that I'm writing about it and you have pictures, it really doesn't look as bad as I thought initially. But the fabric is woven much "tighter" on the sleeve on the right in the photo. The pink threads are much closer together than the pink threads on the left. Good thing it's sleeves and not fronts. But I'll just keep moving when I'm wearing it and no one will notice. :)

The sleeves don't look so obvious Julia. My mom used to say the same thing too, when something was wrong with self-made clothing, she would say "walk fast". Or "the 'man' on the galloping horse won't see it".

I looked at your winter pictures, that is an incredible amount of snow. If we were that snowed in here the country would shut down. We didn't get any winter either and now I am dreading the summer confined in the house with all the wasps and big biting flies which will be around.

Thanks Heather, I think they are not so bad as when I first noticed them.

When we get this much snow, we are shut down too! But we dig out and then get going again. Where do you live that you have biting flies in the summer? (I remember that you live in Germany, is that right? But it must be in the countryside.) We have them here and mosquitoes too but not so much in the city.

Yes, I am in the countryside in Germany and usually you will find these flies around horses so you might know them under another name. They are called Bremsen here. If you google Bremsen and check Wikipedia you will see the 'fly from hell'. It even chases after you and doesn't go away with a wave or a swat!

Julia, when you scroll down the page you will see some lovely pictures of these flies.
For me, gardening is nigh impossible. They are out there almost with sunrise. I try to go out by 8am but they are there waiting. I am dreading it! Do you have any tips on dealing with them?

I think I'll move to London, it is so dirty that even insects have a hard time surviving...LOL...but a lovely place to be, just don't stay in a hotel or eat food...LOL...EXPENSIVE!

Eek! I went to the German Wikipedia and looked up "bremsen". They seem to be a lot like what we call deer or horse flies here. When I lived in the country, the deer flies would follow you down the road even if you were walking fast and there was a wind. The only way to tolerate them was to get a net that fit over your head (wear a hat underneath) and you had to have on long sleeves and pants. They would bite my dog and raise huge welts on her nose. The city may be dirty but at least we don't have the flies!
